GP trainee FAQs
How are trainees matched with practices?
See Trainers Home.
What are county courses?
These are days where Oxford and Banbury ST3s join up for a shared day, usually on a single subject - eg ethics, complementary medicine, psychological medicine, evidence-based medicine.
What happens at the mid-term assessment?
This happens about 6 months into your ST3 training and is a chance for you, your trainer and two visiting trainers to look at your progress to date and plans for the last months of your ST3 year. It usually takes 2 to 3 hours. There are 2 visiting trainers and one of them may well be your Educational Supervisor from your ST1/2 years. This helps to calibrate your progress in WPBA and you will probably be asked to share some videos of your consulting, or some cases, which can then be used as the basis for a COT or CbD. We would encourage you to share the outcome of your MTA with the PD team (although this is not compulsory) as this then helps us in our quality assurance of practices.
When do I have my appraisal?
Towards the end of your training. This is a confidential exercise, done with your trainer, and the PCT is informed that it has happened but does not have access to any details or documentation.
How would I transfer to/from another deanery?
There have to be very persuasive educational or personal reasons for a registrar to transfer deaneries and this needs to have been a material change in circumstances since your appointment to the GP Training Scheme. You need to apply first to your own postgraduate dean to request a transfer. Read more about the process at the Oxford Deanery website.
Can I take time Out of Programme (OOP)?
Find our more about taking time out of programme for either: approved clinical training (OOPT), clinical experience (OOPE), clinical research (OOPR) or for a career break (OOPC) in the Gold Guide to postgraduate medical training. Requests should be made at least three months in advance of the time off, and approval is entirely at the discretion of the GP Dean. The application form is within the Gold Guide.
