Welcome, whether you're on the Oxford scheme or hope to join us for your GP registrar year.

There are currently 15 in the St3 registrar group, having joined in August 07. There is usually a great range of experience among the group, which registrars can draw during the day-release course and for peer support.

GPR FAQs

How are registrars matched with practices?
New appointees are given details of all the training practices with vacancies and asked to visit them if possible, so they can meet the trainers, and then rank them in order of  preference. While it's not possible to guarantee you'll get your first choice, the programme directors do try and match every doctor with a practice they like.

What's the Cumberland Lodge introductory course?
It's a free course that new deanery registrars are expected to attend, and focuses on learning and self-development.

What are county courses?
These are days where Oxford and Banbury registrars join up for a shared day, usually on a single subject - eg ethics, complementary medicine, psychological medicine, evidence-based medicine.

What happens at the mid-term assessment?
This happens about 6 months into your training and is a chance for you, your trainer and two visiting trainers to look at your progress to date and plans for the last months of your GPR year. It usually takes 2 to 3 hours, partly over a sandwich lunch. You're asked to fill in a questionnaire in advance and send it to the visiting trainers with your CV. We supply a feedback form that we recommend is used on the day, but you can decide whether or not to share the results with the course organisers - this is optional.

When do I have my appraisal?
Towards the end of your training. This is a confidential exercise, done with your trainer, and the PCT is informed that it has happened but does not have access to any details or documentation.

How would I transfer to/from another deanery?
There have to be very persuasive educational or personal reasons for a registrar to transfer deaneries. You need to apply first to your own postgraduate dean to request a transfer. Read more about the process at www.oxford-pgmde.co.uk/gp/interdeanery.html.

What's the application procedure for a senior registrar role?
Check the Deanery website for details, at www.oxford-pgmde.co.uk/gp/srs/ or email mlynch@oxford-pgmde.co.uk
