ST1 We currently recruit eighteen ST1s to the Oxford district scheme. As all Oxford GP training programmes have 18 months in hospital posts and 18 months in GP, trainees have a six-month GP slot scheduled within ST1 or ST2 and for some this will be the first job on their ST1 rotation. The GP trainer withwhom a trainee works in their first GP slot is their educational supervisor for the first two years of training. Trainees include two academic GP trainees who do a four-year programme, working part-time in practice and on their research project in years three and four. Once successful applicants are appointed to the Oxford district scheme, they are asked to rank the available job rotations in order of preference. We try our best to honour people's preferences, basing allocation on scores at selection and taking into account any special circumstances, for example a trainee's prior experience in one of the specialties on our jobs list. ST1s attend an Oxford Deanery induction day in September during which they meet with all the other Deanery GP trainees and then have time in their district group with the local programme directors. Learning set Following this, our Oxford district ST1s meet as a learning set on the first and third Tuesday afternoon in each month. This takes place at the George Pickering Education Centre on Level 3 of the John Radcliffe Hospital. We run a mix of GP-related teaching topics and from January ST1s make short presentations to the group on medical subjects of their own choice. This is also an opportunity to catch up as a group and discuss any issues that have arisen during training. Eportfolio and meeting your educational supervisor Two of the most important aspects of starting in ST1 from the point of view of GP training are first to register with the RCGP so that you can begin to log entries in your GP eportfolio, and to meet your educational supervisor to talk about your educational development. We recommend that you aim to complete one or two learning log entries a week, and share them promptly with your educational supervisor so that they can read them and comment. The programme directors regularly check that eportfolios are being kept up to date - it can be really arduous for trainees to catch up! It's also really important to get underway doing Mini CExs and Case-based Discussions (CbDs), ready for your first educational supervisor report in January. Your ST3 practice Towards the end of the ST1 year, trainees have the opportunity to meet trainers in order to decide which practice they might like to work in during their ST3 year. This usually happens via a sort of speed-dating event run on a Tuesday afternoon, following which trainees are encouraged to visit practices that interest them, before putting in their preferences to the programme directors. Trainees are allocated as fairly as possible and only if two or more trainees ask for the same practice, will the views of the trainers be considered. Links to our training practices' websites are available here however bear in mind that not all practices are available every year, as some already have other learners scheduled in. ST3s are offered a mix of practices so they can choose eg whether to opt for an inner-city, market town or more rural practice, and also have some choice of size of practice. |
