Brief Practice Profile
Wantage is an historic market town lying 18 miles south of Oxford. To the south lies beautiful countryside with the Ridgeway path and White Horse Hill as well known landmarks. Wantage and its satellite, Grove, are the focus but a network of surrounding villages makes this a rural practice. There is easy access to motorways and mainland railway making it a very accessible place and attractive to commuters.
We moved into a new building in May 2003.Consulting rooms are now spacious and light and offer excellent working conditions.
On the old health centre site is a Community Hospital, which has a 3 bed obstetric unit, physiotherapy department and 24 in patient beds. 13 GPs in the area have admitting rights and a wide range of problems are dealt with locally because of the distance to Oxford. This provides excellent educational opportunities particularly in geriatrics and rehabilitation. Peripheral clinics taking place in the health centre include ENT, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, , Rheumatology and Gynaecology, all of which welcome registrar attendance.
Special features
The Practice is fully computerised and became paperless in 2004. We are responsible for providing care for a convent and 3 nursing homes. As a teaching as well as a training practice we have a medical student attached to the practice from Oxford Medical School, which we all greatly enjoy. We have the usual array of practice staff but unusually we have an information manager who organises meetings, performs audits, literature searches and helps with any projects or educational activities. Each week we have a clinical meeting in protected time that is well organised and resourced and helps maintain the academic ethos of the practice. On 4 mornings a week we meet to discuss interesting cases and referrals. Having said this we are a relaxed, informal practice with strong leadership but no hierarchy.
The Registrar
Our registrars have their own consulting room and are expected to become fully involved in all practice activities. Every partner becomes involved in training and we all value enormously the benefits of being a training practice, not least the opportunity to benefit from the skills and fresh ideas each new registrar bring with them. We believe that the year should not only be stimulating and informative but also enormous fun.
The Partners
There are 6 doctors, 4 male and 2 females each with their own areas of special interest and expertise ranging from medical politics to dermatology. With our careers diversifying several are now part-time and enjoy a range of outside commitments that helps to maintain the energy of the practice. . The partners are Paul Bryan and Cheryl Fairley (both trainers), Mark Drury, Philip Ambler, Rick Godlee, Joy Arthur. Our manager is Sheila Dearman who is happy to be contacted for more information.
