Didcot Health Centre PracticeBritwell Road, Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 7JH
Brief Practice ProfileDidcot Health Centre Practice cares for approximately 16,000 patients, the majority from Didcot Town with a significant group of under-privileged people. The remaining population being drawn from nine surrounding affluent villages. The Health Centre is in the middle of town and has a full complement of attached staff on site, including Social Services, Podiatry, Speech Therapy and the usual para-medicals. We have a satellite surgery called the Asbury Medical Centre located on a new housing estate. This modern, also purpose-built, building is approximately a mile from the main practice. Patients are registered with the Practice and can see any doctor of their choice at either of the two centres. There are currently nine doctors working in the Practice from both centres. The majority are female and part-time. There is a highly evolved and motivated professional team of nurses, with developments in health care technicians and skill mix. The Practice has been pioneering in information technology and 'paper-lite' for many years. Consultations are without paper records using the Torex Synergy Clinical System and Front Desk Appointments. Incoming data is either directly linked or scanned into the computer notes. There is an Intranet for various locally relevant information sources and each workstation can access the Internet as well as medical text and information leaflets. Training PackageThe Practice has been training for more than 25 years. We have two full-time male doctors who are training at present. We consider ourselves a true 'training practice', as the whole practice team is involved in tutorials and teaching at all levels. The Trainer participates in perhaps the majority of the weekly two hour tutorials as well as a one hour 'coffee' session per week. By virtue of this long established tradition and the regular attachment of medical students the ethos of the Practice is towards training and registrars are welcomed by patients and staff alike. Four of our current partners are previous registrars. The work commitments and design of the curriculum are agreed with each new registrar according to experience, abilities and wishes. We encourage opportunities for diversity both within and outside the Practice. We meet informally for coffee breaks, set into the surgery times, as well as formally as a clinical team at least twice per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and some Fridays. Specialities and PeculiaritiesThe Partners offer a wide range of expertise and interests both individual clinical specialities such as diabetes, dermatology and across the board of academic research, Medico-politics, clinical governance and postgraduate education. We are a PMS Pilot site looking carefully at the new GMS contract. IT at the Health Centre is fairly sophisticated with the introduction of Prodigy, the Synergy software, which is a detailed decision support/policy/protocol system. The Intranet continues to evolve into a useful tool. SummaryRegistrars joining Didcot Health Centre are welcomed into a supportive and progressive team, which will help them through a challenging year developing the flexibility and competence to become an independent and satisfied doctor who will continue to learn with energy and enthusiasm throughout an interesting career. |
