Donnington Health Centre
Trainer: Dr Peter Saunders and Dr Marion Anscombe We are an eight-partner (6 and ½ WTE) practice working from two sites: Donnington Health Centre (DHC) - is large and busy. It is located on Henley Avenue and is shared with Paresh Mehta, a single-handed doctor. Richards Medical Centre (RMC) - this is located in Headington and has the feel of a village practice. We are a partnership of four full-time men and three part-time women. We have two doctors on the retainer scheme and one on the flexible career scheme with reduced hours due to family commitments. Training and teaching are high priorities in our practice. We have had medical students and trainee district nurses in the practice for many years and GPs in training since 1994. We are a friendly bunch with a keen interest in continuing education. We use a personal list system, with some flexibility to accommodate two sites and patients' desire to see a particular doctor for a particular problem. For out of hours cover we are part of the local shared rota OXEMS We cover the whole of the east side of Oxford within the ring road and extending into the villages just outside. The population is mainly urban and suburban and ranging from social class 1 in the villages of Iffley and Headington, to the most deprived of bed-sitter land. We have a tremendous mixture of patients, including long-established Oxford families, travellers, asylum seekers, drug and alcohol abusers, and a wide variety of ethnic minorities. The Cowley car factory and the Oxford hospitals are the area's largest employers. We cover old people's homes, nursing homes, disabled children, an undergraduate college and a convent. Our list has risen to 12,600, with all ages well represented. We are in an exciting time of practice development having recently merged two practices. There is the prospect of further change. Our work involves constant review, audit and updating. Although our accommodation is of a good standard, we have recently extended DHC to provide additional office space and improved treatment room and counselling facilities to enable the expansion of our range of special services. The new contract is stimulating much discussion and planning. Nothing ever stands still! We have a dedicated team of administration staff, most of whom have been with us for many years, and we are lucky to have particularly enthusiastic practice nurses, district nurses, health visitors, a counsellor, a psychologist and a drugs worker all of whom are actively developing their roles. We meet regularly to foster good team working, both formally and informally. The Practice aims to provide high quality medical and nursing care to our patients without regard to race or religion, within the constraints of the resources available. You would be joining a team dedicated to providing a high standard of care for the patients and a good learning environment for everyone. |
