Area, Population and Premises

Said to be the largest village in Britain, Kidlington and its surrounding parishes has a population of about 20,000. The 13th century parish church looks out over the meandering Cherwell river and it stands at the heart of the old Cotswold stone village. One mile from the A34, 3 miles from the M40 and 6 miles from the centre of Oxford, Kidlington is well placed and well served by buses into the centre. For the more leisurely paced traveller the picturesque Oxford canal runs down the spine of the village, past the somewhat busier Oxford airport.

4,700 patients are registered at the practice. The health centre is well appointed and recently expanded. The registrar has their own consulting room. The computer, which has a full network with internet links, uses the EMIS clinical system.

Special Features

There is a well established primary health care team and a community mental health team is based at the health centre. We also have the benefit of a visiting physiotherapist, a counsellor, dietician, podiatrist, speech therapist and visiting consultants in gynaecology and in physical medicine. The treatment room is fully equipped for minor surgery.

We attend the Ley Community which is a residential rehabilitation community for substance abuse. The police and fire services have their regional headquarters in Kidlington and other local employers include the Elsevier Press and the Oxford air training school.

The health centre is part of the North East Oxford PCT. Increasingly we are joining with the rest of the PCT with the development of local commissioning, clinical governance and in the planning of postgraduate education activities including appraisals.

The Registrar

We encourage registrars to develop their skills in self-directed learning and self assessment. There is an opportunity to participate in all meetings of the team and in the practice's planned care for diabetes, asthma, contraception, HRT, hypertension etc. Besides the weekly 2hr tutorial, there is a system of regular debriefing and also informal discussion on a daily basis.

The Partners

  • Dr Simon Street has been a trainer for l9yrs and is the associate director in the deanery with responsibility for summative assessment. He was an examiner for the MRCGP for 10years. He has a masters degree in Family Medicine from Canada.
  • Claire Nesling is a PCT appraiser
