Area, population and premises

The North Oxford Medical Centre was founded in 1990 following a move to a beautiful large, late Victorian detached house. It serves a diverse population of around 5,300 with a significant turnover in the younger age groups, mainly middle class (academics, retired teachers, medics etc.) but also having younger families, visitors from abroad and patients living in group homes. A daily surgery is held in Somerville College close by in term-time and weekly visits are made to a local school.

Special features

There is a breadth of expertise amongst the four partners, two male, two female. Robert Mather has a lot of experience of LMC work as a previous longstanding chairman, does work for the Mental Health Board Commission and, with the practice Health Visitor, is on the Board of the City PCT. Peter Williams sits on the Board of the MDU and appears as an expert witness in the High Court. Helen Steel is College Doctor at Somerville and looks after the medical students attached to the practice. Karen Howie assumed the trainer's role in the autumn of 1999.

The Registrar

North Oxford Medical Centre is a long-established training practice and the Registrar participates fully in the working of the practice and the primary care team, sharing surgeries, on-call duty, the baby clinic and some minor surgery sessions. Out of hours is covered by OXEMS and it is expected that the Registrar will gain experience with the trainer or partners on OXEMS sessions.

The Registrar has their own consulting room. There is a library and coffee room where staff, including the Registrar, meet every day to take telephone calls, write prescriptions and converse. The Registrar is encouraged to attend practice meetings, the practice awayday and be involved with the multi-disciplinary team inside and outside the practice. There are ample opportunities for research and audit backed by an up-to-date Windows-based computer system, Torex Synergy, with networked PCs in the consulting rooms and access to the Internet and computerised databases.
