Area, Population and Premises
The Abingdon Surgery is based on a listed building in the centre of Abingdon. The building has been extended to provide purpose built facilities. The partners, Assistant, and Registrar, all have their own consulting rooms. There are two treatment rooms, including minor surgery facilities, also a clinical meeting room, common room, and administration office. The practice library is housed in the Practice Manager's office.
The practice population is 10,000 with a complete mix of patients.
Abingdon is a market town which continues to expand due to the popularity of the area. There are good road and rail links to London, the South Coast and the Midlands.
Easy access to Central Oxford by public transport.
Special Features
The practice has a reputation for its informal and friendly atmosphere. Despite the new GMS contract we continue to operate an "own list" system. Average consultation rate but low visiting rate. OOH covered by SW Oxon PCT. There is teaching of first year and final year medical students.
The surgery uses Premiere Synergy clinical system. The practice is paperless. We are linked for registrations and pathology. Broadband internet access, including Cochrane and Medline data bases.
The Registrar
Has his/her own room with computer terminal. Formal teaching is provided by all the partners and the Practice Manager. Support is available from all members of the Primary Health Care Team.
The Partners
- Dr Neil Crossley: senior partner, trainer; professional rugby coach currently working with Oxford University. Married with three daughters, all currently at university.
- Dr Prit Buttar: ex-army surgeon. Interests include cardiology, medical computing, writing and food & wine. Undergraduate tutor. Married with two teenage children. Member of the GPC.
- Dr John Hayden: enjoys sports and travel, involved with Air Ambulance Service. Undergraduate tutor. Father of John Jnr.
- Dr James Vickers: enjoys sports and travel overseas. Spent 5 years working as a GP in New Zealand.
- Dr Janet Murray: assistant. Mother of 2 young children. Keen sailor.
- Dr Julia Johnson-Ferguson: assistant. Mother of 3 young children. Has worked in several different practices across the south of England.
