Welcome to all trainers and prospective trainers. Please help develop these pages further - all ideas and links will be considered. Click here if you want resources or a list of Oxford District trainers by PCT or a model contract.

Becoming a trainer

Becoming a trainer in the Oxford Deanery involves undertaking your Certificate in Medical Education. Please contact Sarah Whiteman at the Deanery for details re: courses.

All prospective trainers are also expected to participate in local trainer groups (see details below), which can be a valuable source of encouragement and guidance through the accreditation process.

Out of hours

Please be sure your trainees (whether ST1, 2 or 3)  are completing sufficient out of hours training  - one 4-6 hour session per month while they work in general practice. Your trainee can organise sessions via the PCT, or with an approved Out of Hours educational supervisor.

Donnington Trainers' group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month: 1pm to 3pm at Donnington Health Centre (no December meeting). Facilitated by Barbara Wallis.

How are learners matched with practices?

Trainers are expected to commit to the full range of training opportunities - F2 doctors, ST1, ST2, ST3 (on both a full time and less than full time basis). The type of learner will be allocated by the PD team to ensure a fair distribution of the different types of learners.

The specific allocation of F2 doctors will be undertaken by the Foundation School and practices are requested not to make prior arrangements with specific individuals.

ST1 & ST2 learners will also be allocated by the PD team and the allocated trainers will be their nominated Educational Supervisor for the first two years of training (which will involve 6 months with them in practice and 18 months in hospital posts).

For ST3 learners, we aim to give GPStRs and trainers an element of choice, rather than simple allocation. This usually involves a matching event (similar to speed-dating!) and the GPStRs are then encouraged to visit practices prior to ranking them.
