What's new

Foundation Year 2 placements

Nine training practices are hosting F2 rotations in 2007-8: four of the rotations are academic. F2 doctors in the other five practices will have a day out per week in a specialty to gain extra experience.

Numbers for 2008-9 are expected to be similar.

Moving to 3-year GP training schemes only

As a result of Modernising Medical Careers, candidates are being appointed in 2007 to ST1, ST2 and ST3 specialist GP training posts. From 2008 we expect there to be ST1 appointments only.

Trainees will potentially spend up to 18 months in general practice, with some days dedicated to different learning opportunities in the area.
The equivalent SHO time will offer opportunities for innovative training posts.

nMRCGP

GP trainees starting their ST3 (registrar) year in 2007 will be assessed by the nMRCGP in order to qualify as a GP.

Training for trainers is being provided by the Deanery as part of two study days on 12 and 13 June, and also via trainer groups.

Check www.rcgp.org.uk for the latest on the curriculum and assessments.

Out of hours

Please be sure your registrar is completing sufficient out of hours training - they need at least 12 sessions of 4-6 hours. If you don't do OOH yourself, it's still your responsibility to organise sessions for them via the PCT, or with an approved Out of Hours educational supervisor.

Contact Peter Burke or Caroline Nixon if you'd like to join the St Bart's lunchtime group, and Oliver Sharpley or Penny Moore if you want to join the afternoon group that meets at the JR.

Scheduled meeting dates are on the home page.

How are registrars matched with practices?

The course organisers recommend registrars visit all practices with vacancies and ask them to rank the practices in order of preference. While first choice can't be guaranteed, the course organiser team does try and ensure doctors are placed in practices they like.

Only if two or more registrars want the same practice are views sought from the trainer. Remember that when a registrar visits this isn't a job interview - they have already been appointed.
